What mode am I supposed to be in? »

If you are not sure what mode you need to be in, use this rule of thumb.

If you want to do a statistical calculation choose the STAT mode. For anything else use the COMP mode. Press MODE and the mode menu appears. Use the numbers to make your selection.

Why do I have commas instead of a decimal point? »

If numbers include a comma in place of a decimal point, press SHIFT MODE (SETUP), the down arrow and press 4. Then select 1 for dot.

How do I get my answers to come out to be decimals? »

You can use the S<=>D which converts any fraction to a decimal answer.

There is no setting available to insist on decimal answers. The calculator will use fractions where possible.

If you prefer decimal answers you need to be in LINEIO mode (press, Shift-mode and choose option 2). Your fractions will be displayed using the _I calculator notation (back to front L )

Or alternatively  you may operate in MATHIO mode (press, Shift-mode and choose option 1 ). Your answers answers are then displayed as 'natural-textbook' fractions - and you can just  press the S<=>D key (middle right on your keypad).

How To's

1-Variable Statistics » For the fx-82AU and the fx-82AU PLUS

Clearing data in the memories
Unlike other calculators, this calcualtor 'forgets' the data in the statistics memory when the STAT mode is exited or the STAT setup information is changed. There is no need to clear memories before starting a new statistics calculation if the calculator has been operating in a different mode since the last statistics data was entered.

Using the STAT mode
If STAT mode is not showing on the screen, press MODE 2. This will bring up another screen.

Press 1 for 1-Variable statistics. You can choose either to enter scores individually or in a pair of columns for the score and and corresponding frequency. To change between the options, press SHIFT MODE (SETUP) and then down arrow. Press 3 for 'STAT' to bring up the option of frequency on or off.

By pressing 1 for ON, you can enter scores and their frequncies. If you press 2 for OFF, you will have to enter the scores individually.

Entering scores without frequency
Enter each score followed by = each time. You can use the up or down arrow on the keypad to check the scores. If there is an error, you can either place the cursor on the error and type over it, or press DEL to delete the individual score.

Entering data into score and frequency columns
Set the calculator to STAT (MODE 2), press 1, SHIFT MODE (SETUP), the down arrow, press 3 then 1 to turn the frequency column on.

Example:

Scores

Frequency

7

3

8

6

9

11

10

4

Position the cursor on line 1 in the x column and press 7 =. The cursor will move down to the next row and a frequency of 1 will be displayed. Enter the other scores by pressing 8, =, 9, =, 10, =. Each score will be displayed with a frequency of 1. Use the right arrow on the keypad to move the cursor into the frequency column then press the up arrow to highlight the number in row 1. Type over and press = to change the values.
